Have a rental home with a 70'ish built kidney shaped pool approx. 3ft to 7ft deep end. Size is 20x16, approx. 14k gal. and 1.5" piping.
Currently I have a 1hp Hayward super pump (new). I can get a Hayward C1200 for the same price as the C900, so my question is the C1200 to large? Can the 1hp pump handle that size filter. I want to have the right sized equipment for this pool. If your wondering why a new filter, well someone swiped the filter and pump :(

As a general rule of thumb you usually want the smaller pump and the larger filter compared to the standard pool industry advice. A smaller pump will save you money on electricity while a larger filter will reduce the frequency of backwashing/cleaning and improve the overall system efficiency.
