Dropping calcium levels

This probably is a stupid question, but what causes the calcium levels to drop?

Added water with a lower calcium content. There's virtually no other way to get it out of your pool.

It could also drop if the calcium came out of the water as either scale deposits on your pool or if it precipitated out as calcium carbonate, which would make your water very cloudy. High pH and/or high TA are the culprits.
