Does anyone have any experience with the Solar Fish? A local pool store is recommending these over a solar blanket, stating that they are just as effective at trapping heat, and easier to use. What are your thoughts?

They tend not to work very well unless the water is completely calm. A little breeze will disrupt the protective layer.

i use them all summer but on cold nights i will take out my blanket and use that to keep the heat in

In general the liquid solar blankets do help. However the solar fish does have one thing you need to keep in mind. They are battery powered devices which you can not replace the batteries! So if the batteries die before all of the liquid is pumped out, you have to cut open the fish and dispense it that way. There are other similar products available which are cheaper and as good.
The Heatsavr liquid (the stuff inside) does work to maintain some heat and prevent evaporation but ONLY if the surface of the water is undisturbed so the pump needs to be off and no wind blowing to produce surface ripples. They are probably more effective on indoor pools and on commercial installatiions where the liquid is introduced with a peristaltic pump. In a best case scenerio they can hold about 6 degrees overnight (most blankets will hold about 10). Most users see only about a 2-3 degree heat saving, if any.
