SWG allow you to have a higher CYA with lower CL levels

I've never seen a definitive answer, but the consensus is that the high chlorine levels within the cell make up for the higher CYA level. It isn't the salt.
 
It's partly the more continuous dosing and partly the high chlorine level at low pH near the chlorine generation plate and maybe partly the higher salt level. All probably contribute, but we don't know by how much individually. My guess is that it's mostly the first two factors and the salt level is minor. Automated dosing is probably better than manual dosing but not as good as the saltwater chlorine generator in terms of the minimum FC/CYA ratio to prevent algae growth.
