Polaris 280 on strike

I'm a newbie to TFP and very happy to have found you all!
I live in SW France, and just bought a house with IG pool surrounded by trees, mainly cedars that shed little needles constantly.
My Polaris 280 has gone on strike.
Could it need priming? If so, how?

What exactly does it do when you turn the booster pump on? Is the tail spinning like mad and it's not moving?
