Dusty/Sandy-like Algae (newbie & frustrated) PLEASE HELP!

Aug 12, 2012

I am a new pool owner and I have never had any type of pool maintenance experience in my life, that being said, I need some serious help and the pool guy as well as the pool specialist store have not been able to help me. I have done exactly what they said and there is still algae, so here's the background..I just recently bought a house with a pool and had a new liner put in and basically a whole brand new pool in general. Put the water in and have had problems ever since. I have a salt water pool and it is about 18,000 gallons, a grecian 16x32 pool. Ever since we opened it, it has been cloudy looking with a green tint to it, the water has definitely not been crystal clear. When we opened it we put all the chemicals in it..shock, baking soda, stabilizer and so on. However, about 4 days after we opened it, a dirt like substance started showing up. My husband and I, being newcomers to pools, didn't think anything of it and just vacuumed it up on "filter." Within the next day, it had reappeared and we still thought nothing of it but we upset about the pool water still being greenish and cloudy, so we took our water to the pool store to get it tested. The woman tested our water and it was totally fine, the chemical levels were almost perfect. Then, we mentioned something about the dirt and she immediately told us it was algae and that's why it had returned and that could cause the water to be discolored and off-looking. From there, we got more shock and algaecide to put in (this was about a week ago). So when I got home I put shock in and then the algaecide (which I mixed with four gallons of water as told by the pool specialist, and then put in the pool - next time should I mix with water first or just put in?) and waited 24 hours for the algae to die. 24 hours later.. I walked out and vacuumed up the supposedly "dead" algae off of the bottom. Then, my pool water was looking pretty good! Within the next 2 days, once again, did I have dirt-like algae on the bottom again. I took my pool water back to be tested and it came back perfect again, perfect chemical levels. I then tested my water with a test kit and it was perfect as well. I also vacuumed it at least 3 more times. Today, a week later, the algae is still there, the pool water is still green and cloudy, and I am just lost. The pool store is obviously not helping me and I just don't know what to do. I have more algaecide but haven't put it in yet because I feel like I need better and more proper directions.

** The thing that I don't understand is that usually, when a pool has algae, the chlorine level has dropped, or some of the chemicals are off, too low or too high, however, I have had mine tested at different places at least 4 different times in the past 2 weeks and they came back perfect..so what the heck am I doing wrong and why do I have algae? I shouldn't have to vacuum my pool out every single day.

All I really need is some real advice, none of this bull Crud the pool store has fed me that hasn't work, am I doing something wrong? how do I get this algae out and this pool to normal so that I can finally feel comfortable swimming in it? It's extremely frustrating, someone please please please help me! I am absolutely desperate.

Agree we need some numbers.

Although you can learn a lot by reading Pool School ... button in the upper right of the page.

Posted from my Droid with Tapatalk ... sorry if my response is short ;)

You've come to the right place. These people here are the pool "experts". Seriously, get the recommended test kit, post your results, and you'll never have to visit the pool store again except for pool toys. Your pool will sparkle like it never has before.

Re: Dusty/Sandy-like Algae (newbie & frustrated) PLEASE HELP

 You have come to the right place!

First thing to do is post any/all numbers you have.

THEN you order a GOOD test kit! pool-school/pool_test_kit_comparison (I strongly suggest the XL one as you will be doing quite a bit of testing in the beginning.)

THEN you start the shock PROCESS pool-school/shocking_your_pool
It will be harder for you to do since you do not have a test kit yet but you can/should start adding bleach now. Once you get your test kit it will go faster.

HUGS to you! You CAN do it!

Re: Dusty/Sandy-like Algae (newbie & frustrated) PLEASE HELP

Thanks everyone!

I'm sorry I have no clue about this stuff yet but I appreciate everyone's help! Where do I get these numbers from? And which test kit is the best one? Will the test kit give me the number y'all are asking about?

Kim - when I went to pick up my second algacide and she tested my water again, I asked her if I needed shock and she said no because my chlorine levels were high enough already. But since I don't really know anything yet, should I still shock it? And I'd shock it with bleach is what you're saying?

Thanks for everyone's help, I'm willing to do whatever I can to fix it and learn the ins and outs of the pool

Re: Dusty/Sandy-like Algae (newbie & frustrated) PLEASE HELP

I recommend reading through Pool School (button at upper right) a few times to start to learn about the pool's chemistry and the levels we are talking about.

The link in my signature compares the test kits we recommend. I would suggest that the TF100 is the better value as you will not run out of some of the reagents as fast.

While reading Pool School, pay attention to the "Shocking Your Pool" article ... it is a process and not a one time addition of a powdery product.

A little reading (and asking questions when needed) and a good test kit will quickly give you a better understanding than most pool store employees.

Re: Dusty/Sandy-like Algae (newbie & frustrated) PLEASE HELP

The test kits are in the link I posted. They will give you the numbers you need to battle this beast :whip: !

Bleach, good, ole Walmart beach will be your best friend (but not your clothes if you get any on them). Do NOT get any of the fancy/smelly bleach.

I get my chlorine at my local ACE Hardware store. It is 11% active ingredient. The Walmart bleach is 6%. Somewhere these is a chart to help figure out the best cost. I will post it if I can find it before you do. For me it is the ACE chlorine. Be careful of the "budget" bleach as it can be lower in active ingredient so......

You can do it! :whoot:

Oh and the pool store should have given you a print out with numbers on it about the chlorine, PH, TA, etc. I will tell you that the pool store numbers are NOT accurate. There are posts about people talking their water to 3 different stores and getting three different results!

Re: Dusty/Sandy-like Algae (newbie & frustrated) PLEASE HELP

A good test kit is for sure the way to go! Get one on order and in the meantime read through "Pool School" on how to shock. Shocking your pool is a process, not a dump in a solve everything product as the stores would like you to believe.

If your pool store didn't give you the results from testing, you can ask for them. I've only been to the pool store twice and had my water tested while I was waiting for my test kit to arrive. I went to 2 different stores with water taken at the same time and got 2 very different results. The second store wasn't going to give me the results until I asked for them again.... like they were afraid to show me or something.

If you have results from a pool store test, that will at least give us something to start with while we wait for more accurate results from a test kit.

Re: Dusty/Sandy-like Algae (newbie & frustrated) PLEASE HELP

Hey all!

Sorry for the late response, I was away the past couple days. However, I did receive my test kit! So here are the numbers:

FC - 12
CC - 1
pH - 7.70
TA - 120
CH - 180 (the test kit says wait until it turns blue from pink but it turned more purpleish blue and that's the darkest I could get it..does that still count?)
CYA - 42

I know the chlorine is extremely high, but I'm not positive about the others..so I will go from there, slowly I am learning with the help of you all! Extremely appreciate it!!

oh & while I was away, I got back and the algae was all over a section of the pool, not the whole pool just 2 concentrated parts. Before we left we put algaecide in and shocked it as well as brushed it, but just didn't get to vacuum it. I'm hoping all of the algae is dead, but it is most certainly algae, so also..where do I go from here? Vacuum it out..on waste or filter?

You go to the shock process. Your CC is too high and you have visible algae. Shock level is at least 15 FC, and you're only at 12.

The Calcium Hardness test takes a while. If it's purple, you're close, it may just need more mixing. Get the watch and give it a full minute of swirling per drop after it goes purple.

Re: Dusty/Sandy-like Algae (newbie & frustrated) PLEASE HELP

I think you have 2 issues,
1 algae
2 undissolved particulates

Read pool school about how to shock your pool, pull the ladders and lights and scrub them, make sure whilst shocking you scrub and Hoover to waste (not to filter) hoovering to filter can track spores through the filter and also any undissolved particulate matter will keep re-circulating that is too fine to be trapped by the filter, which sounds like your "within 2 days dirt on the bottom" issue.

I agree completely. Follow that process carefully that Richard has linked and your pool will clear.

Thank you so much, I will go to that link and go from there, I'll update you as it goes, but hopefully it will be good news from here on out!

Re: Dusty/Sandy-like Algae (newbie & frustrated) PLEASE HELP

Okay, so a little update..

I Vacuumed out the algae and then put the correct amount I bleach in that it told me to do in the pool calculator. Then I brushed it and jumped in it a few times to help mix up the water, and i did that all last night. So this morning, I woke up and went to look at the pool, once again, there is algae at the bottom, I'm hoping it's dead. And the water is still cloudy, I can't see to the bottom and it's still an off color greenish or something. So where do I go from now? I know I need to vacuum the algae out again and I'm hoping it's dead. But besides that what shoul I do about the actual water? Is there anything else
I should be doing?

Re: Dusty/Sandy-like Algae (newbie & frustrated) PLEASE HELP

It takes a few days, at least, for things to clear up, as long as you keep your chlorine levels up to shock levels. Did you read the pool school yet? It might also help to read some of the previous " Help me I have algae" threads to get a good feel for what goes on in the shock process. I believe they call it POP, which is pool owner patience, when clearing up an algae outbreak. Good luck!

You need to recheck FC level and bring it back up to shock level again. And again and again and again for however long it takes to clear the pool. It's a process, not a one-time blast of chlorine. The more diligent you are about keeping the FC level up, the faster it goes.

Re: Dusty/Sandy-like Algae (newbie & frustrated) PLEASE HELP

My FC level is now at 21, is that too high? I did the test two times to make sure I was getting the same numbers and one time it was 20 and the other was 21.

It is also kind of alarming that my pool went from about 11-12 FC to about 21 in a little over a day. Is that normal? It also rained too, which I thought would have brought my FC levels down not up. I just tested my pH as well and it's at about a 7.5 or so.
