So I've got one of these:

and I'm thinking of picking up 2 more for various places in the yard... BUT.... I'd like to dress them up with some coushions. Then I see a 4' coushion is like $40 cheapest on Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/4-Foot-Bench-Cush ... 15&sr=1-10 for example). That's a little redonk IMO.

I've got a sewing machine I (sorta) know how to use - So for you crafty peeps out there - how do you make outdoor coushions? Like is there special fabric and/or filler meant for outdoor use?

Also - how would I attach it? There's really nothing to tie it to on that box.

There's no reason you can't make them yourself, but to keep them from fading you'll need to use outdoor fabric like Sunbrella. Once you price it, you'll see why it's expensive.

I'm getting estimates for cushions for a built in bench we did. The first one I thought was high at $800, then I went to Calico Corners and it doubled  This is for $28 yd. Sunbrella. Nothin fancy. I wish I knew how to sew! I'm going to an upholstering co. tomorrow and praying the price goes waaaay down. It's just 2 cushions, one is 8' and the other just over 5'.

put Velcro tape on the top of the box and the bottom of the cushion.

I'm pretty crafty and have made many a cushion for seats. You will need an outdoor fabric of sorts to use if you sew it yourself. Otherwise it will bleed and fade and you will have wasted your $ Two best ways to do it.
1) Find an already made outdoor cushion from Home Depot or Lowes Etc. Cut it to size and resew the end to make it fit. Using a smaller thickness cushion will be easier.
2) Buy your own fabric and water resistant pad and DIY. Online there are alot of places you can get this fabric but it is usually $20-30 a yard. For a 4ft cushion you are looking at 2.7 yards to make it so the 40$ premade one is not really a bad price. If you diy then velcro is the best choice to affix it but you need an all plastic based velcro cuz a fabric one will get wet and not stick anymore after a few rains. You will have to sew the velcro on, possibly by hand unless the pad is removable with a zipper. Hope this helps!
