Pool Closing in Chicago

I've read the closing articles in pool school, but didn't see much on freezing water over the winter. Is there a winterizing chemical that prevents the water from freezing? Or does it actually freeze without doing damage? (Seems hard to believe!)

The water freezes in the pool. You need to keep the water out of confined spaces like the skimmer, the plumbing and the pump and filter.

Thanks John, that is interesting. I guess I can see the pool structure handling it, but I would have thought that the freezing would cause havoc with the liner. That is some impressive durability!
