Heat Pump just died

Hey everyone, now that I got my pool crystal clear my heat pump just died on me, so after much debate and talking to the service tech I've decided it's not worth fixing. So now I'm in the market for a new one....my options are limited since in Canada everything's so expensive and harder to get. So far this is what I've found, the cheapest is from Costco for the AquaPRO PRO1100E 112000 btu, but except for the reviews on the Costco site can't find all that much about it, next is a Hayward HeatPro 110 000 btu which my local pool store has on special for about 800$ more but can get it online for a little less from poolsuppliescanada.ca and that website also has a Jandi EE2500 140000 btu for around the same price as the Hayward.

I'm also waiting on a quote from the company the service tech works for, which service wise would be my best option since they're based out of the same small town I live in and service everything themselves, but they specialise in home heating and such but do a little bit of everything. They said it wasn't a Hayward but was owned by them so maybe a Summit? They were looking into what size was needed and should find out this am what they came up with.

I live in NB Canada, so the climate isn't always the warmest which is why we'd like to get another one. Any help or reviews from anyone with one of these units would be appreciated.

With that size pool You are going to have a hard time getting the water warm with those heaters. You are dealing with roughly 200,000 Lbs of water. A 100,000 BTU heater would under the best of circumstances only give you about 1/2 deg F per hour. Idealy you want to have a heater that can raise the water 1.5 - 2 Deg per hour. This would put your needs in the 300,000 - 400,000 BTU range

What size heater did you have before.

I (as well as 3 other friends) have the AquaPro heatpumps from costco. 3 of them are the 50,000 BTU model, and 1 80,000 BTU. One guy purchased his this year, the other 3 were purchased last year. One guy (purchased last year) had trouble with thermostat, for which AquaPro quickly sent a replacement. The other 3 heaters have been trouble-free so far. That being said, it looks like the heaters at poolsuppliescanada work out to be the same price even after shipping and taxes. Had I known that when I purchased my heat pump, I think I would have purchased the Hayward from Pool Supplies Canada because like you, I cannot find many reviews on the AquaPro. But so far, so good with my heater!!

The old heat pump came with the house so I'm not 100% sure but I think it's an 80 000 btu and it seemed to do the job pretty well until this year. We've swam late at nights when it cooled off and the pool stayed nice and warm at around 29-30 degrees Celsius but everywhere I look for my size they recommend a 110 000 which I'm thinking wouldn't be a bad idea to go a bit bigger. Thanks for the feedback on the AquaPro, I'm leaning heavily on canadapoolsupplies.com for the Hayward because parts are pretty easy to get and have lots of dealers in the area. The Jandy is cheaper/btu on special so kinda debating but I don't know much about the brand. Since I already spent my pool reno budget on a new fence this year I might just wait until the fall/winter to buy it so I might be able to get a better price or at least have the money to pay for it without having to finance it so will have more time to do research. Already found out quite a bit since yesterday so will be well informed by the time I make a decision.

danpik, 400 000 sounds like a bit of overkill to me, my old one wasn't anywhere near that big and did the job.
 
I think you mean poolsuppliescanada.com and not canadapoolsupplies.com correct? The reason I am asking is that I want to give you some feedback on dealing with poolsuppliescanada.com. A friend of mine (not one of the ones with an AquaPro heater) purchased a complete pool package from poolsuppliescanada last spring and had it shipped to Newfoundland. This included pool, sand filter system and heat pump. He got it way cheaper than he could have gotten the same package locally. All items were shipped quickly. He was very pleased with the service and communication. This spring when setting up the pool he had a leak in the sand filter. It had been left outside over the winter and I suspect it hadn't been drained properly resulting in frost damage. He explained the problem to poolsuppliescanada and they quickly replaced whatever piece needed replacing even though it was my friend's negligence that was responsible for the damage. So needless to say, based on this, they seem a very good company to deal with.

poolsuppliescanada.ca, was doing to many things at once and got mixed up. glad to hear your friend got great service from them. I found a few other good reviews so thinking I'll go with them when the time comes, can't come close to their price anywhere locally that's for sure.

I have had a Hayward heat pump on my pool for several years now and I have been very happy with the heater. I don't recall what size it is and to be honest it's too dark outside for me to go look. My pool is about 27400G but I am in VA.

Understood, Just putting the numbers out there for you. If you are comfortable with one of the heaters you are looking at that is ultimatly your decision. My 4,500 gallon pool has a 100,000BTU heater and barely get 2 deg F per hour heat gain when running

Yeah I know where you're coming from, I'm sure it'd be nice but I'd hate to see the price on one of those babies! hehe.....I never found my heat pump warmed it up quickly, it's like a small engine in a big car, takes a while to get there but once you get the speed up it'll maintain it no problem so if you set it at a certain temp and let it run, it'll warm it up slowly then maintain your water temperature...that plus need to use a solar blanket at night to keep the heat in.

I agree, I'm thinking back in the day that heat pump was bought it was probably one of the bigger sizes available and the summers were probably on average a lot warmer then they are now. I'd be afraid to guess how old it is, will have to ask the old owner next time I see him. I do plan on going bigger then that, every dealer/web site seems to recommend around 110 000 btu so will try to go at least that, if not a little bigger. Kinda where I liked the poolsuppliescanada.com Jandy 140000 btu, for around the same price as I'd pay for a 110 I get a bigger one. Just don't know much about the brand.
 
I actually just installed a Jandy 120000 btu heat pump last weekend and couldn't be happier with it. Water went from 67 to 87 in under 48 hours and has maintained it since. Worst part was the wiring since it uses a lot more amperage then my old one but gave me a reason to rent a mini excavator for a day.
