rust colored pool stains

we have rust colored pool stains that are getting worse on the floor and sides of the pool. our pool is about 50 X 25.
my pool man says the cause is we need a new filter- is this true ?
is there a safe way to stop the rust to swim in summer especially if you have kids ? what is the best way to treat the rust ?

Can you tell us what type of pool you have? Vinyl lined or gunite?

its not vinly- its just regular white plaster

Firsrt, make sure that it is rust and not something else. If you take a vitamin C tablet and rub the surface of the spot with it, it should lighten if it is rust. If it doesn't, then try rubbing the same spot with a chlorinating tablet. If it lightens from the chlorinating tablet, it's an organic stain and will disappear with proper water chlorination.

What is you fill water source? If it is from a well, you may actually have metals in the water that will stain pool surfaces.

water is from a pipe from the home plumbing- not from a well. Is this related to the pool filter or is the pool man not using the right chlorine ?
