Timer won't shut off

So the pool has a timer that is set to run from 8-4. If I want to turn the pump off during that time to attach the hose and clean, it will not shut off. I have to actually turn it off by going to the electrical box and flip the breaker off????
Why is it doing that?

Obviously sounds like it may be broken.

What timer do you have ... post up a picture.

The mechanical intermatic timers have a small zone near the ON switch that will not allow you to turn the power off ... but that may not be the problem here.

The timer motor is most likely burnt up. Sometimes they will turn on but when it gets to the off pin the motor just stops. We rebuild them at work but if it is just a 120v timer it will be cheaper to just buy a new one.
