My pump basket has leaves and debris in it. When I shut off the pump and open the filter valve to remove the pump cover, all the debris is pushed back into the pipes where I can't retrieve it. Is this happening to others, or is there a fix?

Shut the valves off before opening, and the debris will not move. The pump will also not lose its prime.
Assuming this in inground pool and the pump is above the water level?
You need to shut a valve between the pump and the pool so the water does not flow back to the pool.
