Why do you level an extra foot or two larger than pool

Can someone remind me why for an intex above ground pool, you're supposed to level a circle with a foot or two larger diameter than how big your pool is again? So much to remember to doing this I forget stuff haha. It looks like the posts for the walls go straight down, so that's not it i'm guessing.

So you can set pavers, work around the pool n have room without standing on your head to do it.
