My pump is a Hayward Power-Flo Matrix. 15A, 1.5 HP. I will be putting it on a timer after the pool startup is done. I need to check and see if the outdoor christmas light type timers are rated for 15A. I am wondering about cutting the plug off the power cord and hard wiring it to a switch on a hardwired timer on the wall of the house. Is this overkill? I know there is a switch on the pump, the wall switch is much more visible and easier to get to in an emergency or by my wife who isn't as familiar with it as me.

I like hardwired timers, they are more reliable and just a little safer. They cost more, but they will last quite a bit longer. However, I would hardwire an outlet to the timer and plug the pump into that instead of cutting off the plug.
