Why CYA is lost

I can't seem to maintain my stabilizer. I finally got most of the other chemistry in line, but have been running with a high pH. I know the hot Az sun is part of the reason, but going from 80 to 20 or below, adding > a galon of liquid stabilizer, then repeating the process the next week, dosen't sound right. do I just need solid cya once my levels are right? how much of this stuff should I expect to go through this summer?

I was always under the assumption that CYA is really only lost due to backwashing and splash out.

How are you testing your CYA? Are you using a TF kit or is a pool store doing it?

Are you having to add a lot of water to the pool? Maybe have a leak?

I don't know, I lose a lot too. When I started BBB, my CYA was only 90, and I had been using exclusively tabs for years. I've been BBing for a little over a year now, after the first 6/8 months it got down to 30, and now I put 8-10 tabs in the thing every other month to get it from 20ish to 30/40.

The most common causes of CYA going down are splash out, backwashing, and leaks. It is also fairly common for CYA to disappear over the winter.

but if my salt level is stable, shouldn't that rule out water loss?

I would think so. Im guessing there is a problem with the test in some way if everything else is staying stable
