DE flushing back in and found small fibers

Hi all,

I've had the pool for a few years now and the filter is roughly from the 13th century as far as I can guess. I have it shut down for me (getting professionals involved at least once a season is probably better given my level). Opening it up this year I notice that 1) the DE pumps right back into the pool and 2) there are a lot of tiny aqua colored fibers in the baskets. Would my guess that my filter (or part thereof) has essentially disintigrated be a good one?

I also got in my head that it can be fairly dangerous to open up the filter. Did I get bad advice or are there any special precautions I should take?

Thanks and happy swimming!

John

The filter can be pressurized while the pump is running, but with the pump off, there are no issues with opening it. You probably need some new grids. What model filter do you have?
