Convert Intex pool to thru-wall skimmer?

I have seen several pictures on here where a thru-wall skimmer was added to their intex pool.

What is the advantage of this, and why does everyone seem to connect the thru-wall and the normal inlet connection as opposed to plugging the original hole?

I'm adding one because I'm sick of the over the wall one, (poor performance and always in the way)

Leaving the original is easier then patching, provides additional flow, and if the skimmer gets plugged there is still in intake so the pump doesn't starve for water. (or at least these are my reasons)
