Today I began the process . . . on the TA test using the Taylor K-2006, the sample turns red rather than green immediately after adding the R-008 drops. These are last year's test chemicals since I have been lazy and not ordered fresh. Problem with the TA or just tired chemicals? Thanks.

If the sample turns red immediately, then your TA is zero, or less.

What was your TA on closing the pool?

Are you using trichlor tabs?

Is your water green and/or full of organic debris?

If you have reason to suspect that your reagents are bad/compromised/unreliable then you should replace them.

R-0008 Total Alkalinity Indicator
This solution should be a dark green color. When it begins to stain the milky-colored plastic bottle, differences in initial test and endpoint colors also will be observed.
