The main advantage of a solar cover is because it prevents evaporation, which is the primary source of heat loss. The cover also interferes with solar heat gain. Depending on how much sunlight shines directly on the pool (heat gain) and how much wind there is (large influence on evaporation), that can come out as an advantage or a disadvantage during the day.
The clear ones are best for some heat gain. Think of a car with tinted windows or clear ones sitting in the sun.
