New pool owner here, not sure what to do or where to begin. Previous owner was a pool company employee and the pool looked great. Now the 3 way granuals he used are gone and my pool is spiraling out of control, bought shock chems and algecide. should I get the sticks or granuals? how much shock for 23.000 gal pool?

Yes, a test kit and pool school is a recipe for success!
Also, putting your equipment and pool specs in your signature box will help us help you! You can edit your signature in the User Control Panel (upper left). If you have any trouble figuring out equipment make and model, you can always post a picture for us..or refer to the visual encyclopedia of pool equipment (in pool school).

Until you get educated and equipped with a good test kit, dump a couple gallons of bleach in the pool to stave off problems. Once you have good test results someone here will provide better guidance. Just stay away from pool store suggestions unless you have way to much money and a high pain tolerance.
Without knowing what the numbers are, it's impossible to say how much you should add, but 2 gallons shouldn't hurt anything, though it may not help much either.
