opened the pool today, checked cya. the tube filled to the top and the black dot was still very visable so its less than 20, should i use chlorine tabs to get it to rise

The short answer is no.

If you want to raise your CYA, I would follow the pool calculator and add either solid stabilizer or liquid stabilizer (based on your current and target numbers).
Keep in mind that it can take solid stabilizer up to a week to dissolve. It will also lower your pH.

Granular/solid CYA (a/k/a stabilizer or conditioner) is the most common. Lots of us buy it at Walmart. It can take up to a week for it to appear on the test, however, 24 hours after it has dissolved from the sock we 'assume' it is mixed in the water and adjust chlorine levels accordingly.

The liquid CYA is pricy and it is instant.

thanks will probaly use the solid just because i can get it local, would have to order the liquid

the directions say to pour the stabilizer (granular) slowly into the skimmer but i'v seen on here that the sock method is best . is that what you recommend

Either way is fine. Without the sock, you should wait about a week before you backwash.
