Filter and Plumbing Help

Hello Everyone:

I'm in the process of restoring an old pool and have the opportunity to install a new main drain, and suction line. Unfortunately, there's too much concrete in the way to put in new return lines (they were replaced a few years ago). Will it cause any filter/pump issues if I use 2" PVC plumbing from the main drains, as my returns are only plumbed with 1 1/2" PVC?

Also, can anyone advise as to what size sand filter I need (old one is shot)? The pool is about 17,000 gallons and I have a 1.25HP Whisperflo pump.

As always, thanks in advance...

Larger suction lines are never a problem and are encouraged.

If you can, find the pump curve in your documentation or the manufacturer's website and see how much GPM your pump produces (probably somewhere around 80-90 in a normal pool). Then buy a filter that has a gpm capability about 15-25% larger than the pump.
