Booster pump won't come on (video included)

Came back from our of town and booster pump won't run. It tries to kick on, and makes the sound in the video below for about 10 seconds. If I don't turn the switch it will do that about every 2 minutes.

Any ideas what the problem is? I replaced the front cover (leak) 15 days or so ago, but it was fine when I left on Friday.

How do I attempt that?

Take off the cover in the center of the motor(on the back side). Once the cover is off that will expose the motor shaft. Use a wrench and see if you can freely spin the shaft.

It's either a bad starter capacitor, locked up motor or dirty contacts in the motor.

Yes make sure power is off!

Ok, got the cover off and the motor shaft spins freely, even by hand. Next step?

The best test of a capacitor is to just swap it out w/ a known good one. They're cheap, relatively speaking.

Capacitors can be a little dangerous if not careful, cheaper to just replace it.

I can't seem to find them online. Are they that much cheaper to buy online than at a Leslie's? Or since it's electrical, can I get it at a non pool place for cheaper?

Most any place that rebuilds electric motors and even most small tool repair shops will have a capacitor tester and will test yours for free. (if you want to bring it to my shop in Nor Cal I'll test it for you) Capacitors for motors like that will run anywhere from $20 to $80 and should be relatively easy to find.

I'm pulling mine at lunch today to make sure.

Guy at leslies said they are about $70 and if it is bad the motor is about to go to and i should replace the whole thing for $299.

pulled mine and it llos like this:

the MFD rating matches, but i can't find any on the capacitor website that match that MFD with 165 VAC. (the one in the link above is 110:125). is that a problem.

If you can find one in the right capacitance range and equal to or greater voltage range it'll work fine.

Most likely the 110 - 125 volt one will work fine. If that's all you can find locally I'd go with it.
