I got my Taylor Test Kit. So excited about the little things. I still have black algae on my vinyl liner, but my numbers appear to be in line. Any suggestions?

It's very rare for a vinyl pool to have black algae. How did you determine it was black algae?
Are you sure it's not metal stains?

No, I'm going to start he OCLT tonight since I just got my test kit today. My pool guy came out last year and determined that we had black algae. I don't want to do algaecides unless necessary, so I'm hoping to shock it to death.

Yeah picture is hard to see. Is it the "black stuff" attached to the liner or can you get it to move?
Sorry, I'll see if I can increase the size of it. I've tried scrubbing it to no avail. It doesn't budge at all. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v511/ ... photo1.jpg I'm mostly concerned with the stuff near the seam/edge. The other is probably dirt. And the black stuff doesn't move. It's firmly attached. (Kind of like a blob of bubble gum!)
That's better. I don't think it's black algae, but a metal stain. Have you been using any algaecides?
I did try an algaecide earlier this week, but only once. This was present before that. I'm going to try to get down and get a sample tonight or tommorow. It's 58 degrees here (after a week of high 80's) and I'm not looking forward to closer inspection.
It's definitely some type of algae. I was able to scrap a bit of it off the bottom in the rain.

I don't think it's mustard algae either. Mustard algae likes the shaded side of the pool. There are about 7000 types of green algae. The good thing about all of them is that chlorine will kill them.
Run the OCLT and then post a full set of test results and we'll have a better idea about what to do about it. scrubbing with a stiff brush will help but don't use a steel bristled brush.

That is good to know. Our pool gets full sun! My husband cut down the last remaining tree overhanging it last summer. I will post OCLT in the morning.
Even if you pass the OCLT keep your FC at shock level and brush the tops off the stuff and allow the chlorine to kill it. You may need to do that a few times to get it all dead. Once it's dead you can let the FC come back down to the higher end of recommended.
Definitely didn't pass oclt. Last night FC=25, this morning FC=15. So I added 3 more gallons to bring it back to the 25 level. Is this way too high??
That's kinda high. With a CYA in the 40 - 50 range you should be shooting for an FC of between 16 & 20. AND, you need to test and add as often as you can to keep it there. You also should be brushing the algae as often as you can to keep the tops knocked off it.
Ok, I will definitely work on that. I was grateful that we got some cooler weather this week (figured it would slow algae growth and keep chlorine lasting longer) but it's too dang cold to jump in and really start scrubbing. I will do the best I can until I can get in. Next week we should be back in the high 80's again. Only in North Texas!
