Is Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda the same as baking soda

Re: Is Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda the same as baking

Washing soda is not the same as baking soda. It is ok for the pool, depending on what needs adjusting. It affects the pH and TA whereas baking soda mostly affects TA.

You can use the Pool Calc to see what effect adding it will have. There's a section near the bottom on effects of adding chems.

No, not the same!
Washing soda is sodium carbonate. You use it raise the pH. It will also raise the TA as well.

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. It will raise the pH a little on its own, but mainly used to raise the TA.
The general rule of thumb is to raise the TA with baking soda, and raise the pH with 20 mule team borax (borax rasies the pH, but does little to the TA.
If you need to do both, you can use washing soda. That being said, you can use the pool calculator to see what effect adding either borax, baking soda or washing soda has on the pH and TA. Generally, you need to add less washing soda to effect a change in pH, but it will alter the TA. FWIW, washing soda or sodium carbonate is the same thing as "pH Up" sold at a pool store.

EDIT: holy mac, 3 of us at the same time!

As I mentioned in your other thread...I would use the washing soda (a.k.a. soda ash) to raise both your pH and TA since your CSI is so negative.
