Can water freezing at the return level damage the returns?

My water level right now is about the same as the return water jets, and I'm wondering if the water freezes at this level, can it damage the plastic return jets or the water pipes connected to the return jets?

Normally we get more rain at this point but it has been drier than most years because normally the water level is a good few inches above the jets when the water freezes for the winter.

If water is in the line ad freezes, yes, it can damage the pipes.

No, there is no water in the lines, they have been blown out and capped off OK, it's just I'm not sure about the plastic returns that are around the pool if ice can damage them (the part that physically sticks out from the pool wall).

I would think that it would just freezw "around" it. Ice has plenty of expansion room to go up^.

Ah, ya I never thought of that, I guess the reason it can hurt pipes is it has no where to expand if the pipe is full of water when it freezes.
