Solar cover pulley

Greetings,

My pool is in-ground and in a lazy-L shape. We have a solar cover, but it is rather hard to close the pool and the reel we have is old and not smooth. The cover that was in the house when we bought had a two board and rope attached to the end so we pull it all the way to the other end to cover the pool. Now we changed the cover but not the reel. I need a way more efficient than the old boards and rope to close the pool. Ideas? Suggestions?

Instead of a board, why not just use rope and get yourself some tarp clips to attach to the cover?
