What kind of pump do I need?

Hello,

I’m trying to figure out what kind of pump I need for draining the pool cover as well as drain the pool to close it for the season. I’m new to pool ownership, so I don’t even know if there are other situations to consider. What I’m looking for is to purchase just one pump to do everything (obviously not counting the pump attached to the filter). Will a normal utility pump suffice or should I get a specific pool cover pump? Is there anything specific that I need in terms of submergibility, flow rate, HP, etc.?

What pool cover do you have?

If it's a solid cover, then I recommend the Little Giant Model 5-APCP.

Sorry, just a solar cover for right now. Then a winter cover later on. Is there one style pump I can get for all of my pumping needs?

The Little Giant that JW linked to is a pretty versital pump. You won't need to pump the water off the solar cover. It self drains into the pool.
