How do you add your MURATIC ACID?

I have been told that you can add Muratic Acid to your pool 2 ways and each will give you a different result.
1. If you pour Muratic all in one area near the deep end will cause one action.
2. If you pour Muratic Acid around the pool and not in any one spot will cause another affect.

Can someone explain.

It turns out the slug method (i.e. pouring in one location) to lower TA is somewhat of a myth. You can read about it in this post. The original premise was that pouring acid in one location helps lower TA better than if you poured around the pool. According to the article, this is a myth.

Disregarding the wet PSG for a moment, dispersing acid directly in front of a return jet is very effective and, generally speaking, requires a little less handling than probably any other acceptable method.

Thank you duraleigh. It seems that the proper method is whatever you think you like especially a way not to splash on the deck or clothes.

Actually, they have done tests with the slug method with a dye in the acid and it was found that the acid just sunk to the bottom of the pool in a concentrated puddle! This is a sure way to damage the finish of your pool. :x Either dilute the acid in a bucket of water or pour it slowly in the stream of a return and when you have added it brush down the sides of the pool. This will set up turbulence that will help mix the acid. (Think of it as stirring your pool. It's a good idea to brush down the sides after adding ANY chems to help mix them!)

No matter how you add the acid it will lower your pH and TA by exactly the same amount for a given volume of acid. Most people in the industry have the 'slug method' so entrenched in their brains that they don't want to hear otherwise! :blah: (I work in the industry!) When your pool store guy tells you to slug the acid just smile at him a nod. You now know better!
