can I add bleach?

I cannot afford the expensive test kit yet...we took the sample to Leslies and were told to up the CYA, which I did today, but we've been adding a gallon/day for a week and the water is still cloudy. I can see the bottom, it's just not crystal clear. Just wondering if I can add some bleach now, in anticipation of a big Harry Potter party this evening.

18' round/48" high AG pool
approx 7200 gallons
sand filter (large...was used for a 24' round previously)

You can go ahead and add bleach any time.

And some place I've read to add bleach to skimmer, others say to add where the water comes back in and disperses...which is better?

In front of a running return is the best place to add it. I wouldn't recommend adding a large quantity of bleach to the skimmer though it probably wouldn't hurt anything unless the pump was off.

Keep in mind that, in the long run, a good test kit will save you money. Counting on pool store testing is a sure route to problems which will cost more to fix than the kit.

I know, will do...just need to budget it!
