Water Conditioner

With a Salt system do you use water conditioner? The pool tech that setup the initial water told me to add a conditioner every six months to help maintain the pool.

Welcome to TFP!

We don't advocate adding anything on a time scedule. Test the water and add what is needed. The only thing you know for sure that a SWCG pool needs in the water is salt and CYA. Add those as your test results indicate the need.

Conditioner is another term for CYA. So yes, CYA will increase. For a SWG you want CYA around 70-80 ppm. You should not need to add more unless you have a lot of splash out or heavy rain dilution.

It would be a good idea to test the CYA annually and add more if needed to reach 70-80 ppm.

Test at the beginning of the pool season and again after a couple of months, unless you are having problems keeping chlorine levels in the pool, then you may want to test CYA again to rule that out as part of the problem.
