Sand filter with a little DE?

I believe I read somewhere that it helps with the small stuff the sand cant get? Is this true? Does it work? Our water is crystal clear but want to remove as much small partical stuff as possible... as well if it is possible, we have a 250 pound sand filter and how much DE would be needed? and how do you add it? Thanks!!!
