Does anyone have any experience or thoughts regarding the IMPower variable speed motors by Marathon Electric? It seems like a great option for those of us looking to replace a motor in the 1 HP range. Turns on at high speed for 2 hrs. then to a lower programmed speed for energy savings. Costs about $450 on line with a 2 year warranty. Seems like a nice compramise between a regular two speed motor and the more expensive and complicated Intelliflo type pumps. The web site is www.impowerdealer.com. Thanks for your thoughts.

Welcome to TFP!

If I am following their description correctly that is a three speed motor, with high and low speeds matching what you would see on a two speed motor and an additional third speed that is in-between the other two. It also has an automatic control that allows it to start on high speed for two hours and then switch to low speed on it's own.

I can't see any real advantage of that motor over a traditional two speed motor. What you really want is for the third speed to be lower than the low speed on a standard two speed, which that motor doesn't do. It would also be nice if it could run on medium speed for 15 minutes and then switch to low, but it doesn't do that either (unless you use an external automation system).
