Skimmer location

We are having an above round pool installed in a little over a week and we are having an issue with skimmer/pump location.

The people at the pool store tell us that the skimmer really needs to be in the northeast or northwest corner so the wind can assist with the skimming process. How much effect will this really have? Will we see a huge drop in performance if we located the skimmer/pump on the southwest corner instead?

The reason this is an issue is that our current patio is on the northwest corner, and place it on the northeast corner would seriously impede the deck we are planning to build.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

If that's the way the wind blows, that's where it should be. It's very important. I could kill whoever set up my pool for the shortest pipe runs rather than the best spot!

Just frame up the deck so you have a liftout section to access the skimmer. It'll only add a few bucks to the job, and will save you so much frustration you won't believe it.

The best place for the skimmer is downwind, especially if you only have 1. If the skimmer is up wind, debris will always seem to float away from the skimmer and you will be spending a lot of time scooping it off the top by hand.
