We have an outdoor/in-ground pool, chlorine based and experience the coughing anytime splashing takes place, which is almost all of the time.
This started last season, the third since the pool was built. I believe it is the CYA (150 reading) and dont know how to lower it besides draining 50% of the volume. Suggestions? other readings are: FC 1.5 CC 3, hardness 100. I've owned inground pools for almost 15 years and never had this puzzling problem.

Hi - I split off your post to form your own topic.

IF your CYA is 150 then yes, you need to lower the level through water replacement. Otherwise if Reverse Osmosis is in your area you can try that. Your CC is 3 that is certainly part of the problem.

You need to get down into the 50-70 range for your CYA to be able to properly shock the pool. Do you have your own test kit?
