Hello. I know the little lever under the skimmer bucket opens and closes the bottom drain. But should it be in the up or down position when under normal use? Thanks.

It shoud be adjusted to give you the best circulation. You want enough skimmer action to get all the surface debris into it.

The lever is aligned with the plate so whichever way the lever is aligned shows you the position of the plate. If it's vertically 'up and down' the MD isn't pulling at all. You can adjust the 'flap' on top to allow more suction from the MD.
