Amount of DE?

First off, Im brand new here so Im sorry if this has been asked in the past and hellow to everyone.
My Hayward filter says to pre-coat with 4 lbs of DE. Well Ive been guessing the past couple of years. Ive been using four coffee cans (I dont think there one pound cans, 13oz) Im sure coffee's weight is different than DE any way.
Does anyone have any advice on a better way of measuring?
I know they sell 1 LB DE Scoops, but I refuse to pay $10.00 - $15.00 for a plastic cup.

I believe your coffee can holds 1/2 lb of DE. The best way to tell is to fill it and weigh it once.

is it to late to add more? its been running about a day

You can add more, but it'd be a good idea to backwash and add about 80% of the fresh charge.

I don't have time now so I just added a little over 3 more coffee cans for now.
Tuesday I'll flush and started from scratch and add 6 coffee cans.
Does that sound okay?
