Heat Pump in Michigan?

We are planning on getting a 20x40 vinyl pool installed this coming spring. Michigan has a May through September pool season at best. I am considering getting a heat pump over gas heater. Would we be best suited to just get a gas heater due to the short season? Also considering the weather at the ends of the pool season will we be able to get enough heat out of a heat pump to heat a 30k gallon pool?

Welcome to TFP!

Heat pumps cost more to start and then usually cost much less to use, if your electric rates are reasonable and you are heating the pool when the air temperature is reasonably warm. You can get heat pumps in various sizes, you will presumably need a larger one for the larger pool. For extending the season by a month or so on either side they are quite good.
