DE, paper, or Sand filter?

Can someone give me the pros and cons of DE, paper, and sand filter types? I am being told that DE are the best but might be more maintenance. Each pool company has their preference of filter type and downplays the alternative to their sales pitch. Trying to cut through the pitch and hear from owners with experience.

If you had it to do over again, which filter type would you install?

Had a cartridge, replaced it with de and own a sand filter now as well. I'd go with de every day of the week.

Simplified. De is best but requires maintenance. Sand is easy but doesn't clear as nicely.
