I'm going to be installing a 18' by 38' oval above ground pool with a 6' deep end. Are pool lights needed or recommended? I plan to use my pool in the evenings sometimes I'm sure, but I will have outside lighting. If lights inside the pool are recommended, any recommendations on what types or brands I should look into?

I would always recommend lights for a pool. For safety sake if not for asthetics as well.
If you have lights shining ON the pool...........may be all you need. Between the lights on my deck, a corner street light, the neighbors' security light and tiki torches...........you dang near need sunglasses! Installers put my pool light where I didn't really want it (half way down one side) which shined directly toward my house deck. The existing deck at the time was only 10 feet from the near long side of the pool. I never bothered to put it back on the far end shining lengthwise.
So if pool lights are recommended... what exactly do I need to look for? How many? Are there different types? I'm guessing they should be installed before the pool is filled, so I will need to order them soon if I'm getting them... and I have no clue about them
