New to TFP...I have been fighting algae since shortly after opening my pool 3 week ago. I have always used a local pool store to test water and make recommendations, but I am really frustrated with them. So I bought the Leslie's DPD test kit. I began this morning by adding 192 oz of bleach. Reading are as follows:

FC 3
TC 5
PH 7.2
TA 80
CH 230
CYA 50

I have read about getting FC to "shock level" to kill algae. Looks like I should get FC to around 22 for a shock level. However, my kit reads Cl from .5 to 5. How do I get readings in the 20s?

Welcome to TFP!

The only way for you to accurately test FC levels above 5 ppm is for you to use a kit with a FAS-DPD chlorine test. The Taylor K-2006 or TF-100 kit (link in my sig line) will allow you to test this way.

Yes, you must get to FC to shock level for your CYA and hold it there until your pool clears.
