Question about baking soda and chlorine

We had a vinyl liner pool growing up and my mom said a pool guy once told her that adding a bunch of baking soda to the water allowed her to use much less chlorine. She said the pool guy told her to add so much that you could slightly taste the saltiness of the baking soda in the water. She did it and said it did work. Not sure if she used trichlor or bleach for the chlorine.

Has anyone ever tried this method?

I don't see how that could work. Lots and lots of baking soda is going to raise both the PH & TA quite high, which will makes chlorine less effective and is going to be prone to metal stains and calcium scaling.
