Topping a pool up with water when owner not there?

Been using a twist timers via a hose pipe by gardena, which are a good make but some have failed and meant the water has kept running until I next visited!! In Spain water is all metered and expensive so dont want this happening a lot but if pool is sucking air in via skimmer what is a reliable solution to this?
 
There are some battery operated digital ones that use an electric solenoid, but I am not sure of their reliability.

I've got one of the twist timers, but figured if that broke I'd rig something a bit more permanent with a couple irrigation solenoid valves and a 2 hr timer hooked up to a 12V power supply. The reason to use 2 solenoids is to increase the reliability should one fail open, but most of the time they fail closed as they are open only when power is on.
