Going from cartridge to sand filter

Easier is a relative thing. Size is more important than the type. Any sufficiently large sized filter is not going to be an issue when cleaning because the time between cleanings is extended. However, if you're wanting something that's easier to clean during the actual cleaning operation, then the sand is less labor intensive than a cartridge once it and a proper waste line is installed. Where you have to dismantle the filter, rinse the cartridges and reassemble the cartridge filter, all that's required to clean a sand filter is to stop the pump, switch the multiport to backwash, start the pump and run it till the backwash runs clear, stop the pump, switch to rinse and run the pump about a minute, stop the pump, switch to filter and start the pump in it's normal run cycle. One of the drawbacks to a sand filter is that it wastes a lot of water during backwash.
