Pool water dissappeared & liner shredded after winter close

Our vinyl pool was closed for the winter and had a winter cover over it. Around November we had a bad wind storm and our fence, trees, etc. went down. In January, after a lot of snow, but we live in MN and always have snow, the pool cover collapsed, the pool was completely empty and the liner was shredded, with a large hole into the vemeculite (sp?). We think the water drained (how? not sure) causing the cover to collapse from the weight of the snow and no water to support it. Insurance is saying the snow caused the cover to collapse which somehow caused the pool to drain (not a covered incident). Can anyone help us figure this out? What happed to the water?[

What kind of pool cover do you have? Was it a safety cover or a tarp and water bags?

In any event, the reason the cover collapsed was because the water drained out. Any kind of cover, whether a safety cover or tarp, needs the water underneath to hold up the snow load. My GUESS is that the dirt underneath the vermiculite may have been undermined by some ground water and caused the hole to start. Since the liner was cold and brittle, it just got ripped up.

If the cover just collapsed because of the weight of the snow, it would just float on top of the water. No way did the cover collapsing cause this. My suggestion is to talk to your insurance company again. Either the person you talked to has no idea how all this works, or they are just not wanting to pay. Sometimes you need a pool builder to look at it and use them as a reference for the insurance company.
