How do I know if the seals need to be replaced?

When I went to start the pump after a filter cleaning, the motor hummed so I stopped it. I tried to start it again and it started up. Whew.
I had to stop it again because it was not priming and I poured some water in the strainer basket and sealed it all up.
I flipped the switch and I got a rattling sound and no water movement.
WHAT??? So I stopped it to think and started it one more time to verify. Yep. rattle with no water movement. Ugh.
I stuck my fingers in to feel if the impeller was moving, and it moves freely.

I have a Hydramax II from Leslie's, 1 HP. No idea how old, we purchased the house 2 years ago with little to no history.

Do I upgrade to a new 2 speed motor or replace the motor or just replace the seal?
What do you guys think?
