So you have to close your pool?

I live in Arkansas and today the high will be around 84 and this is some of the coolest weather we have had. It will get colder and we will traditional have some temps below freezing.

Do I have to close the pool or can I just maintain it over the winter, leaving the pump on a time to cycle unless it becomes freezing and then letting the pump run.

You don't have to close it. I left mine open all last year. I have my timer set to run the pump in the early mornings because that's the only time it ever gets below freezing around here. There are some timers that have or can be fitted with a freeze relay that will run your pump any time it gets close to freezing.
