Whole House Surge Suppressors

Any of you 'lectrically inclined folks out there have experience with whole house surge suppressors? What brands/models do you suggest? Are any reasonably straightforward for a homeowner to install, or should I have an electrician do it?

Any whole house surge protector worth having should be installed with no more than 14" leads to the main panel. That's usually something most homeowners aren't comfortable doing so calling a electrician is a good idea.

What would one cost (not the electrician)? Are they from Lowes etc?

Leviton and Intermatic are good units. You can probably buy Leviton at Lowes.
