We have an 40 year old Pacific Pool and the metal coping is rusting. We have tried painting it each year and the rust returns. Even when we paint it, it doesn't look good... have no way of sanding it all down without getting all the paint chips in the pool. Is there some vinyl that can be stuck to it or some other ideas we could think about short of filling in the pool?

I would think a thorough sanding, priming, and painting would be the way to go. The filter will get all the paint chips, I wouldn't worry about it.

I am in the same boat and am going to try sanding and then an epoxy paint, possibly marine grade since I just added 2000 ppm salt. I figured wet sanding with a shop vac handy and try to catch as many chips with an aluminum pan and add a skimmer sock in the skimmer as backup.
