Inlet- outlet confusion

Hello everyone, I tried to post this but guess it didn't take.

I am new to posting and to pools. This site is pretty neat and sure glad I found it.

I am wanting to know if I have this popup pool filtering wrong.

Is the water that comes back in to the pool supposed to be closer to the surface of the water than the strainer/ suction side?

Mine is the opposite, does it make a difference to the pump or the circulation of the pool?

In other words, my suction line is at the top surface and the clean water comes in about 4 inches under the water level

That should be correct. On the standard pools our skimmer is at the surface and return is lower

I had almost had DH drain part of the pool to switch it, because I thought I had put it together wrong. Thanks again.
